           COSTA, EARLL, ERICKSON, FERLO, FOLMER, FONTANA, GORDNER,
           GREENLEAF, KASUNIC, LAVALLE, MADIGAN, McILHINNEY, MUSTO,

           SEPTEMBER 15, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of October 2008 as "Pennsylvania Fire
     2     Prevention Month" in Pennsylvania, observing the week of
     3     October 5 through 11, 2008, as "National Fire Prevention
     4     Week" and urging Pennsylvanians to heed fire safety messages.

     5     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is committed to ensuring the safety and
     6  security of all persons living in and visiting our State; and
     7     WHEREAS, Fire is a serious public safety concern, both
     8  locally and nationally; and
     9     WHEREAS, Homes are where people are at greatest risk from
    10  fire; and
    11     WHEREAS, The nonprofit National Fire Protection Association
    12  has documented that home fires killed, on average, eight people
    13  every day; and
    14     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's first responders are dedicated to
    15  reducing the occurrence of home fires and injuries from home
    16  fires through prevention and protection education; and

     1     WHEREAS, Residents of this Commonwealth are responsive to
     2  public education measures and can take personal steps to
     3  increase fire safety; and
     4     WHEREAS, Residents who have created and practiced a home fire
     5  escape plan are more prepared and will therefore be more likely
     6  to survive a fire; and
     7     WHEREAS, The 2008 "Fire Prevention Week" theme--"Prevent Home
     8  Fires"--reminds us of the simple actions we can take to remain
     9  safe from fire during "Fire Prevention Week" and year-round;
    10  therefore be it
    11     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of October 2008
    12  as "Pennsylvania Fire Prevention Month" in Pennsylvania, observe
    13  the week of October 5 through 11, 2008, as "National Fire
    14  Prevention Week" and urge all Pennsylvanians to heed the
    15  important fire safety messages and support the many public
    16  safety activities and efforts of Pennsylvania's fire and
    17  emergency service providers.
