A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the month of February 2008 as "Women's Heart 2 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Heart disease and stroke are largely preventable 4 with early detection and prevention; and 5 WHEREAS, Heart disease and stroke affect one out of three 6 women; and 7 WHEREAS, Someone dies every 37 seconds of cardiovascular 8 disease; and 9 WHEREAS, Each year since 1984 the number of cardiovascular 10 disease deaths for females has exceeded the number of 11 cardiovascular disease deaths for males; and 12 WHEREAS, More than 460,000 women die each year from all heart 13 and blood vessel diseases combined; and 14 WHEREAS, Sixty-four percent of women who have died from heart 15 attacks had no previous symptoms of this disease; and 16 WHEREAS, More than 45% of women have high cholesterol; and
1 WHEREAS, Women account for 61% of total stroke deaths; and 2 WHEREAS, The cost of cardiovascular disease and stroke in the 3 United States in 2008 has been estimated to reach in excess of 4 $440 billion; and 5 WHEREAS, Compliance with prescription instructions, medical 6 guidelines and physician directives is important to 7 cardiovascular health; and 8 WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is committed to 9 public education about heart disease and stroke and urges women 10 to learn about risk factors for heart disease and stroke and to 11 take action to reduce, control or prevent as many risk factors 12 as possible; and 13 WHEREAS, The American Heart Association supports ongoing 14 medical research to promote early detection, prevention and 15 treatment of heart disease and stroke; and 16 WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is the largest 17 voluntary, not-for-profit organization whose mission is to 18 reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and 19 stroke; and 20 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania/Delaware Affiliate of the American 21 Heart Association spent more than $9.1 million during fiscal 22 year 2006-2007 for research support; therefore be it 23 RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of February 24 2008 as "Women's Heart Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania and urge 25 all citizens to spread the message that cardiovascular disease 26 is the number one health threat for women and men; and be it 27 further 28 RESOLVED, That the Senate challenge all Pennsylvanians to 29 take charge of their cardiovascular health and to support the 30 lifesaving mission carried out by the more than 220,000 American 20080S0228R1725 - 2 -
