SENATE BILL

No. 1544 Session of 2008

                                     AN ACT

     1  Designating the bridge on State Route 655 on Main Street,
     2     Belleville, Union Township, Mifflin County as the Curt Zook
     3     Memorial Bridge.

     4     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5  hereby enacts as follows:
     6  Section 1.  Curt Zook Memorial Bridge.
     7     (a)  Declaration of policy.--The General Assembly finds and
     8  declares as follows:
     9         (1)  Charles Curtis Zook's dedication and service to his
    10     community led to the formation of Village Pride in February
    11     1998. As Chairman of Project Impact, a sub-committee of
    12     Village Pride, Mr. Zook orchestrated the improvement of
    13     downtown Belleville to lessen the flood damage and erosion on
    14     the Kishacoquillas Creek. Though a tremendous volunteer
    15     effort, Mr. Zook and the association received over $780,000
    16     in grant funding to enlarge the creek's flood plain, provide
    17     open space and expand the bridge that will now honor him and
    18     further protect the community from future flooding; and

     1         (2)  Born in Belleville, Mifflin County, Mr. Zook
     2     graduated from Mercersburg Academy, attended Lafayette
     3     College and served in the United States Marines during the
     4     Korean War;
     5         (3)  Mr. Zook was married to Patricia Womeldorf Zook and
     6     had three daughters, Lisa, Laurie, and Letitia; and
     7         (4)  After his military service, Mr. Zook was President
     8     of Ka-Vee Dairy, founded by his father and also worked for
     9     Keystone Food Service, Womeldorf Trucking Company and Rich
    10     Coast Coffee Company; and
    11         (5)  Mr. Zook was a member of the Belleville Lions Club,
    12     Lewistown Rotary Club, Marine Corp League, Ka-Vee Kamp and
    13     West Kishocoquillas Presbyterian Church, and served on the
    14     Village Pride Association and Mifflin County Industrial
    15     Development Corporation; and
    16         (6)  Charles Curtis Zook died on July 16, 2008, at 79
    17     years of age.
    18     (b)  Designation.--The State Route 655 Bridge on Main Street
    19  in Union Township, Mifflin County is designated and shall be
    20  known as the Curt Zook Memorial Bridge.
    21     (c)  Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
    22  maintain appropriate signs which shall display the name of the
    23  bridge designated under subsection (b) at each end of the
    24  bridge.
    25  Section 2.  Effective date.
    26     This act shall take effect in 60 days.
