        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           SEPTEMBER 9, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the work that Philabundance does in an effort to end
     2     hunger and malnutrition in the Delaware Valley.

     3     WHEREAS, The Philadelphia area is in a hunger state of
     4  emergency; and
     5     WHEREAS, Philabundance is the region's largest hunger relief
     6  organization; and
     7     WHEREAS, Philabundance was founded as a nonprofit food
     8  distribution system in 1984 and works to end hunger and
     9  malnutrition in the Delaware Valley by acquiring food and
    10  distributing it through organizations to people in need; and
    11     WHEREAS, Philabundance serves low-income residents at risk of
    12  hunger and malnutrition, of whom 23% are children and 16% are
    13  senior citizens; and
    14     WHEREAS, Philabundance is supported by contributions from
    15  individuals, corporations, businesses, foundations and religious

     1  and civic groups; and
     2     WHEREAS, Approximately 27% of the food produced in the United
     3  States goes to waste each year, while millions of people go
     4  hungry; and
     5     WHEREAS, In fiscal year 2007, 24 million pounds of food were
     6  distributed in this nation; and
     7     WHEREAS, Hunger has many faces and touches more than 900,000
     8  individuals in the Delaware Valley; and
     9     WHEREAS, Philabundance provides food to approximately 65,000
    10  people per week through its network of more than 600 member
    11  agencies; and
    12     WHEREAS, America's Second Harvest commissioned the 2006
    13  Hunger in America Study, which reported that individuals
    14  receiving hunger relief in the Delaware Valley increased more
    15  than 100% in five years, from 2001 to 2005; therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
    17  work Philabundance does in an effort to end hunger and
    18  malnutrition in the Delaware Valley.
