A RESOLUTION 1 Memorializing Congress to designate a day each year in honor of 2 the lifetime achievements of the late Roberto Clemente. 3 WHEREAS, Roberto Clemente was born on August 18, 1934, in 4 Carolina, Puerto Rico; and 5 WHEREAS, Mr. Clemente played 18 seasons in Major League 6 Baseball (MLB) as a right fielder and right-handed batter from 7 1955 to 1972 with the Pittsburgh Pirates; and 8 WHEREAS, Mr. Clemente won the National League MLB Most 9 Valuable Player Award in 1966; and 10 WHEREAS, Mr. Clemente died in a plane crash on December 31, 11 1972, while en route to deliver humanitarian aid to earthquake 12 victims in Nicaragua; and 13 WHEREAS, Mr. Clemente was posthumously elected to the 14 National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973 as the first Latin
1 American to be selected and the only exception to the mandatory 2 five-year postretirement waiting period since it was instituted 3 in 1954; and 4 WHEREAS, In 1973, Mr. Clemente was posthumously awarded the 5 Congressional Gold Medal and in 2002, the Presidential Medal of 6 Freedom; therefore be it 7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 8 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania memorialize Congress to designate a 9 day each year in honor of the lifetime achievements of the late 10 Roberto Clemente.
