INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MAY 13, 2008
A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the week of May 11 through 17, 2008, as "Armed 2 Forces Week" in Pennsylvania and encouraging the observance 3 of May 17, 2008, as "Armed Forces Day" in Pennsylvania. 4 WHEREAS, "Armed Forces Day," since it was established by 5 President Harry S Truman in 1949, is annually celebrated on the 6 third Saturday of May as part of "Armed Forces Week," which runs 7 from the second Saturday to the third Sunday of the month; and 8 WHEREAS, With pride in our nation's military strength and 9 successes, we acknowledge the members of our Army, Navy, Air 10 Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard and the 11 Reserves and the government civilians and family members 12 supporting them; and 13 WHEREAS, A large number of our armed forces are actively 14 engaged in the global war on terrorism; and 15 WHEREAS, More than 160,000 men and women of the armed forces
1 are currently deployed to combat zones in Iraq and Afghanistan 2 to fight the global war on terrorism; and 3 WHEREAS, Our nation relies on the National Guard and other 4 reserve component forces like never before in our history, with 5 about 20% of the deployed troop strength coming from the 6 National Guard and the Reserves; and 7 WHEREAS, More than 450,000 members of the Reserves and the 8 National Guard have been called to active duty for the conflict 9 against Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001; and 10 WHEREAS, This year's "Armed Forces Day" theme is "United In 11 Freedom," and military units from all branches stationed in 12 Pennsylvania will be conducting an "Armed Forces Day" program on 13 May 17, 2008, on City Island in the State capital of Harrisburg; 14 and 15 WHEREAS, It is the intent of the House of Representatives to 16 recognize the men and women of our armed forces for their 17 dedicated service to this Commonwealth and our nation and 18 commend them especially for the outstanding performance of their 19 duties in Iraq and Afghanistan, in the global war on terrorism 20 and in response to natural disasters; therefore be it 21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 22 week of May 11 through 17, 2008, as "Armed Forces Week" in 23 Pennsylvania; and be it further 24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage the 25 citizens of this Commonwealth to observe May 17, 2008, as "Armed 26 Forces Day" in Pennsylvania.
