        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 9, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the month of May 2008 as "Science: It's Elementary
     2     Showcase of Student Learning Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, During the month of May 2008, school districts
     4  across this Commonwealth will be participating in the program
     5  Science: It's Elementary Showcases of Student Learning; and
     6     WHEREAS, Students will showcase scientific discovery and
     7  actively engage parents, teachers, community members and
     8  legislators with investigations from the Science: It's
     9  Elementary modules that highlight important science concepts
    10  sparked by hands-on, inquiry-based learning; and
    11     WHEREAS, Through a $13.5 million appropriation in the fiscal
    12  year 2007-2008 State budget, the Department of Education is
    13  partnering with Achieving Student Success Through Excellence in

     1  Teaching Incorporated (ASSET) to provide teacher-professional
     2  development for 2,600 teachers, impacting nearly 59,000 students
     3  in 120 school districts across 47 counties throughout this
     4  Commonwealth; and
     5     WHEREAS, Because of the partnership between ASSET,
     6  Incorporated and the Department of Education, elementary school
     7  students are learning science through the best education
     8  practices which are delivered by highly dedicated and qualified
     9  educators who have participated in ASSET Incorporated's rigorous
    10  professional development program; and
    11     WHEREAS, Since its establishment in 1994, ASSET Incorporated
    12  has directly impacted more than 1,800 teachers and 125,000
    13  students annually in approximately 40 school districts and
    14  charter and private schools in western Pennsylvania; and
    15     WHEREAS, ASSET, Incorporated has bridged school districts in
    16  western Pennsylvania and across this Commonwealth with quality
    17  educational opportunities by bringing together governmental
    18  agencies, corporations, foundations and universities in support
    19  of science education reform; therefore be it
    20     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
    21  outstanding contributions of the science education reform
    22  initiative, Science: It's Elementary and recognize the month of
    23  May 2008 as "Science: It's Elementary Showcase of Student
    24  Learning Month" in Pennsylvania.
