A RESOLUTION 1 Urging the President of the United States and the Congress of 2 the United States to reject the recent Pentagon decision to 3 award a $40 billion defense contract to a foreign entity for 4 the construction of United States Air Force mid-air refueling 5 tankers and urging Congress to investigate this decision. 6 WHEREAS, Pentagon officials recently awarded a $40 billion 7 defense contract to the Northrop Grumman Corporation, in 8 patnership with the foreign-based European Aeronautic Defence 9 and Space Company, to build 179 mid-air refueling tankers for 10 the United States Air Force; and 11 WHEREAS, In making this decision, Pentagon officials 12 overlooked the Boeing Company, which is based in Chicago, 13 Illinois, and which currently employs more than 160,000 people 14 across the United States and in numerous other countries, with 15 major operations in Washington, California and Missouri; and 16 WHEREAS, This decision, if allowed to stand, would have a 17 significant impact on jobs in this nation, the economy and
1 United States military operations; and 2 WHEREAS, Tens of thousands of American union and nonunion 3 jobs are at stake; and 4 WHEREAS, There are national security concerns in awarding 5 this defense contract to a foreign contractor that deserve 6 closer examination; therefore be it 7 RESOLVED, That in the interest of preserving American jobs, a 8 strong economy and national security, the House of 9 Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania urge 10 President George W. Bush and Congress to reject the decision of 11 the Pentagon; and be it further 12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 13 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania urge the members of Congress to 14 hold public hearings to investigate and examine the issues 15 surrounding the awarding of this national security defense 16 contract to a foreign entity; and be it further 17 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 18 President George W.
