A RESOLUTION 1 Memorializing the Congress of the United States to recognize the 2 dedication and sacrifice of firefighters by establishing a 3 National Firefighters' Day. 4 WHEREAS, In 2006 there were an estimated 524,000 structure 5 fires in the United States; and 6 WHEREAS, Approximately 3,245 civilians and 106 firefighters 7 were killed in fires in 2006; and 8 WHEREAS, Fire kills more Americans than all natural disasters 9 combined; and 10 WHEREAS, Firefighters perform selfless tasks quietly and 11 often without recognition, risking their lives daily to protect 12 the lives and property of the citizens of this nation; and
1 WHEREAS, Changes in society and in the environment have 2 increased the dangers these individuals face daily in the 3 performance of their duties as protectors of the citizens and 4 property of this nation; and 5 WHEREAS, The increased threat of terrorism, illicit drug labs 6 and hazardous material incidents have placed firefighters in 7 greater danger than ever before; and 8 WHEREAS, The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and the 9 heightened awareness of future threats have only increased the 10 role of firefighters as first responders; and 11 WHEREAS, The time that firefighters devote to protecting the 12 lives and property of citizens of this nation represents time 13 taken away from family members; therefore be it 14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 15 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania call upon the Congress of the 16 United States to recognize the dedication and sacrifice of 17 firefighters by establishing a National Firefighters' Day; and 18 be it further 19 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to 20 the President of the United States and to presiding officers of 21 each house of Congress and to each member of Congress from 22 Pennsylvania.
