        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 12, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of September 2008 as "Ovarian Cancer
     2     Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Every woman is at risk for ovarian cancer regardless
     4  of age, heritage or medical history; and
     5     WHEREAS, According to the American Cancer Society, a woman's
     6  risk of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer during her lifetime
     7  is 1 in 67; and
     8     WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer
     9  death among women; and
    10     WHEREAS, Approximately two-thirds of women with ovarian
    11  cancer are 55 years of age or older; and

     1     WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that there
     2  were approximately 22,430 new cases of ovarian cancer in the
     3  United States in 2007 and that 15,280 women will die from
     4  ovarian cancer in 2008; and
     5     WHEREAS, About one-fifth of ovarian cancers are found at an
     6  early stage; and
     7     WHEREAS, Early detection improves the chances of survival;
     8  and
     9     WHEREAS, Nine out of ten women treated for early ovarian
    10  cancer will live longer than five years after the cancer is
    11  found; and
    12     WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer awareness and education is an
    13  important factor in diagnosis and treatment; therefore be it
    14     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    15  month of September 2008 as "Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month" in
    16  Pennsylvania.
