        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 5, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of March 16 through 22, 2008, as "MPS Week"
     2     in Pennsylvania in memory of Ryan Taylor Mask of
     3     Sellersville, Bucks County.

     4     WHEREAS, Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are rare inherited
     5  metabolic disorders affecting 1 in 25,000 people; and
     6     WHEREAS, MPS symptoms are not apparent at birth; and
     7     WHEREAS, MPS irreversibly damages the liver, spleen, heart
     8  and brain; and
     9     WHEREAS, MPS impairs speech and hearing; and
    10     WHEREAS, Some affected children develop severe retardation;
    11  and
    12     WHEREAS, Few children with MPS reach adulthood; and
    13     WHEREAS, Research has yielded limited federally approved drug


     1  treatments for some MPS disorders; and
     2     WHEREAS, Enzyme replacement therapy and stem cell
     3  transplantation are experimental treatments; and
     4     WHEREAS, Early detection and early intervention by parents,
     5  teachers and medical providers can improve the quality of life
     6  of children with MPS; and
     7     WHEREAS, The National MPS Society supports research funding,
     8  services, public awareness and scholarship programs; and
     9     WHEREAS, Ryan Taylor Mask's family has hosted eight annual
    10  five-kilometer races in Sellersville, raising tens of thousands
    11  of dollars on behalf of the National MPS Society; and
    12     WHEREAS, Ryan, son of Stephen Girard and Dorothy Jean Mask,
    13  died January 12, 2008, at 17 years of age; therefore be it
    14     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    15  week of March 16 through 22, 2008, as "MPS Week" in Pennsylvania
    16  in memory of Ryan Taylor Mask of Sellersville, Bucks County; and
    17  be it further
    18     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    19  the family of Ryan Taylor Mask.
