        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           FEBRUARY 26, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating March 27, 2008, as "Helen Phillips CASUAL Day for
     2     Colon Cancer Awareness" in northeastern Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of
     4  cancer deaths in this Commonwealth, killing nearly 3,000
     5  citizens each year; and
     6     WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is the most commonly diagnosed
     7  cancer in the northeastern Pennsylvania counties of Lackawanna,
     8  Luzerne, Wyoming, Susquehanna, Pike and Wayne, with 700 cases
     9  diagnosed and 300 deaths each year; and
    10     WHEREAS, The Northeast Regional Cancer Institute has
    11  developed and implemented a targeted colorectal cancer awareness
    12  program promoting lifesaving cancer screening and lifestyle
    13  changes, including outreach and education; and

     1     WHEREAS, Helen Phillips, a leading community volunteer from
     2  northeastern Pennsylvania, died of colorectal cancer; and
     3     WHEREAS, Family members and community leaders throughout
     4  northeastern Pennsylvania have come together to honor Helen
     5  Phillips and promote colorectal cancer awareness through a
     6  program known as CASUAL - Colorectal Cancer Awareness Saves
     7  Unlimited Adult Lives; and
     8     WHEREAS, March has been set aside as "National Colorectal
     9  Cancer Awareness Month," and the last Wednesday of the month-
    10  long observance is recognized as "Helen Phillips CASUAL Day for
    11  Colon Cancer Awareness"; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate March
    13  27, 2008, as "Helen Phillips CASUAL Day for Colon Cancer
    14  Awareness" in northeastern Pennsylvania.
