A RESOLUTION 1 Honoring the 250th anniversary of the naming of the Pittsburgh 2 region. 3 WHEREAS, The 250th anniversary of the naming of Pittsburgh is 4 an opportunity to celebrate an important moment in Pennsylvania, 5 American and world history, namely the legendary Forbes Campaign 6 of 1758, a turning point of the French and Indian War; and 7 WHEREAS, The people of Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Bedford, 8 Butler, Cambria, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Mercer, 9 Somerset, Washington and Westmoreland have contributed many 10 innovations that have transformed the nation and the world, from
1 a powerhouse of metals, chemicals and glass to present 2 leadership in materials science, life sciences, information 3 technology and other knowledge industries; and 4 WHEREAS, Pittsburgh 250 has identified and is supporting the 5 completion of three grand "Signature Projects" for residents and 6 visitors that create lasting legacies celebrating regional and 7 national history, the great outdoors and the arts for 8 generations to come, including: 9 (1) The transformation of Point State Park, with 10 expanded riverfront access, public art, a refurbished 11 fountain and more, to serve as the region's "front door." 12 (2) The publication of "Pennsylvania's Forbes Trail: 13 Gateways and Getaways Along the Legendary Route From 14 Philadelphia to Pittsburgh," celebrating the road British and 15 American troops built across Pennsylvania's Allegheny 16 Mountain Wilderness in 1758, a route of history connecting 17 the French and Indian War, Independence Hall, Valley Forge, 18 Gettysburg, the Industrial Revolution, the Flight 93 National 19 Memorial and, on June 24 through 29, the route of the Tour of 20 Pennsylvania international cycling race. 21 (3) The completion of the Great Allegheny Passage, a 22 world-class, 335-mile hiking and biking trail that, combined 23 with the C&O Canal Towpath, connects George Washington's home 24 at Mount Vernon in Virginia to Pittsburgh's Point State Park 25 that bicyclists, outdoor enthusiasts and trailside businesses 26 will celebrate with an inaugural ride that concludes October 27 4; 28 and 29 WHEREAS, Pittsburgh 250 is a grassroots celebration involving 30 hundreds of thousands of individuals and organizations across 20080H0599R3245 - 2 -
1 this Commonwealth through: 2 (1) "Community Connections" grants totaling $1 million 3 to 100 projects in 14 counties that celebrate "Pride and 4 Progress" in history, music, the arts and civic engagement. 5 (2) "250 & Fit," a program challenging residents to 6 transform their lifestyles by committing to improved health 7 and wellness that leads to healthier communities and 8 establishing the Pittsburgh region as a place unique for its 9 dedication to healthy living; and 10 (3) "Reunion and Homecoming," an effort encouraging 11 individuals and organizations to hold homecomings, reunions 12 and meetings that bring former residents and visitors to this 13 Commonwealth through 2008 and beyond; 14 therefore be it 15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 16 year 2008 as a time for all of this Commonwealth's citizens, 17 past and present, as well as visitors from around the world, to 18 join together to celebrate Pittsburgh's history, enjoy the 19 present, imagine a bright future and work together to make it 20 happen by celebrating the anniversary year with Pittsburgh 250.
