A RESOLUTION 1 Commending Pennsylvania's community blood banks for providing 2 invaluable services to the residents of this Commonwealth. 3 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's community blood banks are not-for- 4 profit, community-based blood programs, committed to providing a 5 quality blood supply, responsive to community needs, in a cost- 6 effective manner; and 7 WHEREAS, Each year, more than 4,500,000 Americans need a 8 blood transfusion, and for most, the need is urgent and 9 lifesaving; and 10 WHEREAS, One out of three people needs donated blood in their 11 lifetime, and one out of seven hospital patients needs a blood 12 transfusion; and 13 WHEREAS, It is the blood available on a daily basis that 14 saves lives, and volunteer blood donors are required every day
1 to meet patient needs and to be immediately available in times 2 of disaster; and 3 WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's community blood banks strive to 4 maintain a sufficient blood supply, an urgent task because blood 5 components must be constantly rotated as a result of blood's 6 short 42-day shelf life; and 7 WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's community blood banks are 8 affiliated with the United States largest networks of community- 9 based, federally licensed, not-for-profit blood centers; and 10 WHEREAS, Members of these networks serve more than 150 11 million people and operate more than 600 collection sites, 12 collecting a significant amount of the blood supply of the 13 United States; therefore be it 14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 15 role of this Commonwealth's community blood banks for their 16 invaluable services in providing lifesaving blood to local 17 patients, ensuring the safety of that blood supply and promoting 18 essential blood donor initiatives; acknowledge the efforts made 19 by this Commonwealth's community blood banks to promote and 20 protect the safety and adequacy of blood components provided to 21 patients; and recognize the need to promote a stable blood 22 supply and increase volunteer participation of blood donors.
