A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of November 2007 as "Alzheimer's Disease 2 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative brain disorder 4 which causes progressive loss of memory and intellectual 5 function; and 6 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease was first described in 1906 and 7 has been diagnosed in millions of people ever since; and 8 WHEREAS, More than 500,000 older Pennsylvanians have 9 Alzheimer's disease or related dementia; and 10 WHEREAS, An estimated 5.1 million Americans have Alzheimer's
1 disease; and 2 WHEREAS, By 2050 the number of individuals with Alzheimer's 3 disease could range from 11 million to 16 million; and 4 WHEREAS, Finding a treatment that delays the onset of 5 Alzheimer's disease by five years could reduce the number of 6 individuals with the disease by nearly 50% after 50 years; and 7 WHEREAS, Approximately seven out of ten people with 8 Alzheimer's disease live at home, where family and friends 9 provide almost 75% of their care; the remainder is paid care 10 costing an average of $19,000 per year; and 11 WHEREAS, Nearly all families pay for this care out of pocket; 12 and 13 WHEREAS, The tragic effects of Alzheimer's disease have 14 spurred scientists and physicians worldwide to intensify their 15 research efforts; and 16 WHEREAS, Despite the painstaking efforts of researchers and 17 other advocates, medical science has not found a cure or 18 treatment for Alzheimer's disease; and 19 WHEREAS, The public must access information about Alzheimer's 20 disease and find ways to ease the burden on patients, families 21 and caregivers; therefore be it 22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 23 month of November 2007 as "Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month" 24 in Pennsylvania and urge all citizens of this Commonwealth to 25 become better informed about the disease and its impact.
