A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of October 2007 as "Sudden Infant Death 2 Syndrome Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania and recognizing the 3 need for an education and prevention program that focuses on 4 the risk factors for SIDS and safe sleeping practices for 5 newborns and infants. 6 WHEREAS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), the unexpected 7 and sudden death of apparently healthy babies in which no cause 8 of death can be found after an autopsy and death scene 9 investigation, is the third most common cause of death among 10 newborns, claiming the lives of more than 2,100 babies each 11 year; and 12 WHEREAS, The National Institute of Child Health and Human 13 Development, the Pennsylvania Department of Health's Infant
1 Death Program and the American Academy of Pediatrics provide 2 recommendations for safe sleeping positions and environmental 3 factors that may help reduce the risk of SIDS; and 4 WHEREAS, Infants in this Commonwealth continue to die from 5 SIDS, and caregivers are unaware of risk reduction practices, 6 including placing babies on their backs to sleep, choosing safe 7 bedding, keeping babies from overheating, choosing breastfeeding 8 when possible and creating tobacco-free environments; and 9 WHEREAS, Increasing public awareness among all parents and 10 infant caregivers in this Commonwealth through education 11 regarding the importance of creating a safe sleeping environment 12 has great potential for saving lives; therefore be it 13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 14 month of October 2007 as "Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Awareness 15 Month" in Pennsylvania.
