        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JULY 5, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of August 2007 as "Pennsylvania Produce
     2     Month."

     3     WHEREAS,  Pennsylvania's vegetable industry generates more
     4  than $110 million in revenues to the economy of this
     5  Commonwealth; and
     6     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's 3,500 farm families manage about
     7  48,000 acres which produce more than 200,000 tons of vegetables
     8  for fresh use and processing; and
     9     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable growers are national
    10  leaders in the production of pumpkins (4th), processing snap
    11  beans (6th), cantaloupes (7th), fresh market sweet corn (7th)
    12  and processing sweet corn (8th); and
    13     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania vegetables are not only "Simply
    14  Delicious" but also "Simply Nutritious" in providing important


     1  vitamins, fiber and other dietary components essential to a
     2  healthy, balanced diet; and
     3     WHEREAS, Health authorities have long encouraged increased
     4  consumption of vegetables for nutrition and disease prevention;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, Fresh Pennsylvania vegetables are available in
     7  abundant supply and peak quality at community farmers markets,
     8  roadside farm markets and supermarkets throughout this
     9  Commonwealth during August; and
    10     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable industry is committed to
    11  using integrated pest management and other good agricultural
    12  practices to produce, in an environmentally sound manner,
    13  vegetables and vegetable products that are nutritious and safe;
    14  therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives, in recognition
    16  of our thriving vegetable industry designate the month of August
    17  2007 as "Pennsylvania Produce Month" and urge all citizens to
    18  enjoy this Commonwealth's abundant supply of "Simply Delicious,
    19  Simply Nutritious" fresh and processed vegetable products while
    20  recognizing the industry's contributions to our economy and our
    21  health.
