                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of June 23, 1931 (P.L.932, No.317), entitled
     2     "An act relating to cities of the third class; and amending,
     3     revising, and consolidating the law relating thereto,"
     4     providing for a probationary period for police officers and
     5     firefighters.

     6     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     7  hereby enacts as follows:
     8     Section 1.  The act of June 23, 1931 (P.L.932, No.317), known
     9  as The Third Class City Code, reenacted and amended June 28,
    10  1951 (P.L.662, No.164), is amended by adding a section to read:
    11     Section 4408.1.  Probationary Period.--All appointments to
    12  any position in the city police department or for any position
    13  as a fireman or fire inspector shall be for a probationary
    14  period of twelve months. An appointee may be dismissed only for
    15  cause, during the probationary period in accordance with this
    16  article and Articles XX and XXI. If, at the close of the
    17  probationary period, the conduct or fitness of the probationer
    18  has not been satisfactory to the city council, the probationer
    19  shall be notified in writing that the probationer will not

     1  receive a permanent appointment. Thereupon, the appointment of
     2  the probationer shall cease; otherwise, the retention of the
     3  probationer shall be equivalent to a permanent appointment.
     4     Section 2.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
