           O'PAKE, ORIE, STOUT, GREENLEAF, PIPPY, MUSTO, ROBBINS,
           LAVALLE, WENGER, FONTANA, FERLO, EARLL, ERICKSON, M. WHITE,
           ARMSTRONG, THOMPSON, WAUGH, MELLOW, TOMLINSON, WASHINGTON,

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, SEPTEMBER 20, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the month of September 2005 as "Ovarian Cancer
     2     Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the deadliest of all gynecological
     4  cancers; and
     5     WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that each year
     6  approximately 23,000 women in the United States are diagnosed
     7  with ovarian cancer and 14,000 women die from the disease; and
     8     WHEREAS, A woman's risk of being diagnosed with ovarian
     9  cancer is 1 in 57; and
    10     WHEREAS, Diagnosis of ovarian cancer does not usually occur
    11  in its earliest and most treatable stages; and
    12     WHEREAS, Late-stage diagnosis can cut a woman's survival rate
    13  in half; and
    14     WHEREAS, Breast cancer survivors, especially those 50 years
    15  of age or older, have an increased risk of developing the
    16  disease; and

     1     WHEREAS, The general population knows very little about
     2  ovarian cancer; therefore be it
     3     RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of September
     4  2005 as "Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
