AN ACT 1 Designating the Main Street Bridge in Butler, Butler County, 2 Pennsylvania, as the General Richard Butler Bridge. 3 WHEREAS, During the Revolutionary War, Richard Butler served 4 with General George Washington at Valley Forge and also was 5 involved in the battles of Saratoga, Yorktown and Monmouth; and 6 WHEREAS, At the end of the war, Richard Butler held the rank 7 of colonel of the Ninth Pennsylvania Regiment and served as a 8 commissioner negotiating treaties with six American Indian 9 tribes; and 10 WHEREAS, In 1788, Richard Butler was appointed a judge of the 11 Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County and promoted to major 12 general under General Arthur St. Clair, who was the commander- 13 in-chief of the United States Army; and 14 WHEREAS, General Butler was instrumental in establishing 15 Allegheny County as a separate political entity from 16 Westmoreland County; and
1 WHEREAS, When Allegheny County was divided in 1800, an area 2 north of Pittsburgh was named Butler County in honor of General 3 Butler; and 4 WHEREAS, General Butler was killed in 1791 during the Battle 5 of Miami, which took place in Ohio on the banks of the Wabash 6 River. 7 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 8 hereby enacts as follows: 9 Section 1. Designation. 10 The bridge carrying State Route 8, Main Street, in Butler, 11 Butler County, over the Connoquenessing Creek, the B&P Railroad, 12 the B&LE Railroad and Quarry Street, is hereby designated and 13 shall be known as the General Richard Butler Bridge. 14 Section 2. Signs. 15 The Department of Transportation shall place AND MAINTAIN <-- 16 appropriate signs at both ends of the bridge referred to in 17 section 1 (relating to signs). <-- 18 Section 3.
