        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of May 2006 as "Beef Month" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The beef industry in Pennsylvania contributes $1.7
     4  billion to the economy and is an integral part of our leading
     5  industry, agriculture; and
     6     WHEREAS, Beef producers in this Commonwealth are helping to
     7  ensure a quality food supply for consumers through voluntary
     8  quality assurance programs that help to ensure a safe,
     9  nutritious meat product; and
    10     WHEREAS, This segment of the farm community plays a vital
    11  role in keeping agricultural land in production by adopting
    12  environmental practices that enhance the land and preserve its


     1  viability for future generations; and
     2     WHEREAS, Two of the top ten beef packing plants in the United
     3  States are located in Pennsylvania, accounting for more than 1
     4  million head of beef and dairy cattle harvested annually; and
     5     WHEREAS, Consumer demand for beef has been increasing
     6  steadily in recent years due to the research and education
     7  efforts paid for by beef producers through a $1 check-off
     8  program for each animal sold; and
     9     WHEREAS, Beef continues to be a safe, wholesome part of the
    10  dinner menu in homes and restaurants across this Commonwealth;
    11  therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    13  month of May 2006 as "Beef Month" in Pennsylvania.
