        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 30, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the driving of the No. 9
     2     Mine in Lansford, Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania coal mining industry powered the
     4  United States through the Industrial Revolution; and
     5     WHEREAS, Almost all of the United States' anthracite coal is
     6  found in eastern Pennsylvania, with approximately 7 billion tons
     7  of minable anthracite coal reserves within this Commonwealth;
     8  and
     9     WHEREAS, In 1855, the driving of the No. 9 Mine commenced
    10  with miners reaching one of the largest and most important of
    11  all anthracite deposits, the Mammoth Vein, on December 25, 1857;
    12  and
    13     WHEREAS, Mining continued in the No. 9 Mine for more than a

     1  century, employing thousands of Pennsylvanians while providing
     2  energy for our nation; and
     3     WHEREAS, On a fateful day in 1972 Hurricane Agnes flooded the
     4  No. 9 Mine, marking its last day of production; and
     5     WHEREAS, The No. 9 Mine was and is an exemplary example of
     6  safe mining, for it has never experienced a major mine
     7  catastrophe throughout its long history; and
     8     WHEREAS, The Panther Creek Valley Foundation has reopened the
     9  No. 9 Mine as a museum to educate Pennsylvanians of their proud
    10  coal mining heritage; therefore be it
    11     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the
    12  Panther Creek Valley Foundation for its charitable efforts in
    13  educating Pennsylvania's future generations of their proud
    14  heritage; and be it further
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
    16  150th anniversary of the driving of the No. 9 Mine whose long
    17  history provided prosperity for generations of Pennsylvanians;
    18  and be it further
    19     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    20  the No. 9 Mine & Museum, 9 Dock Street, P.O. Box 287, Lansford,
    21  Pennsylvania 18232.
