        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 28, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring Brian Pohanka for his service to the Civil War
     2     preservation community.

     3     WHEREAS, Brian Pohanka, one of the nation's foremost Civil
     4  War historians, died earlier this month after a long battle with
     5  cancer; and
     6     WHEREAS, Mr. Pohanka is perhaps best known to the American
     7  public for his appearances on the landmark Public Broadcasting
     8  Service series "The Civil War" and on the History Channel's
     9  "Civil War Journal"; and
    10     WHEREAS, Mr. Pohanka was a consultant for the motion pictures
    11  "Cold Mountain," "Gods and Generals," "Gettysburg" and "Glory"
    12  and authored or contributed to more than 20 books; and
    13     WHEREAS, A resident of Virginia and a 1977 graduate of


     1  Dickinson College, Mr. Pohanka became a prominent supporter of
     2  the Gettysburg monument restoration project which began in 1997;
     3  and
     4     WHEREAS, Mr. Pohanka was one of the keynote speakers at a
     5  rally announcing the start of the restoration project on the
     6  steps of the Capitol in October 1997, attended by State
     7  legislators, historians and Civil War reenactors; and
     8     WHEREAS, Representative Harry Readshaw, a major project
     9  proponent, said:
    10         When Brian offered his support, we knew we were on the
    11         right track. The impact of that support from such a
    12         credible historian was incalculable in leveraging other
    13         Civil War enthusiasts to get on board;
    14  therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the memory
    16  and invaluable contributions of Civil War historian Brian
    17  Pohanka.
