        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 29, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating June 11, 2005, as "Alex's Lemonade Stand Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania and encouraging all citizens to contribute to
     3     the Alex's Lemonade Stand Fund and other pediatric cancer
     4     research programs.

     5     WHEREAS, Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in
     6  children between the ages of 1 and 14; and
     7     WHEREAS, More than 45 children are diagnosed with cancer in
     8  the United States each day; and
     9     WHEREAS, Due to advances in research, childhood cancer
    10  mortality rates have declined by 49% since 1975; and
    11     WHEREAS, Alexandra Scott was an extraordinary person who was
    12  diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer,

     1  two days before her first birthday; and
     2     WHEREAS, In July 2000, at the age of four, Alex opened her
     3  first lemonade stand to raise money for pediatric cancer
     4  research; and
     5     WHEREAS, On August 1, 2004, Alex passed away at the age of
     6  eight; and
     7     WHEREAS, By November 2004, Alex's Lemonade Stands had raised
     8  over $1 million for pediatric cancer research; and
     9     WHEREAS, Alex's Lemonade Stand Fund hopes to raise $5 million
    10  in 2005 for pediatric cancer research, the goal established by
    11  Alex before she passed away; and
    12     WHEREAS, Alex's efforts have garnered national and
    13  international attention and have inspired hundreds of
    14  individuals to donate to pediatric cancer research; and
    15     WHEREAS, In 2002 the Alex's Lemonade Stand Fund was created
    16  through The Philadelphia Foundation to accept and manage
    17  donations from all over the world; and
    18     WHEREAS, During the weekend of June 10 through 12, 2005, more
    19  than 75 communities in every state across the country will host
    20  an Alex's Lemonade Stand to support Alex's cause in the fight to
    21  find a cure for childhood cancers; therefore be it
    22     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June
    23  11, 2005, as "Alex's Lemonade Stand Day" in Pennsylvania and
    24  encourage all citizens to contribute to the Alex's Lemonade
    25  Stand Fund and other pediatric cancer research programs.
