1 Recognizing the month of May 2005 as "Older Pennsylvanians
     2 Month" in Pennsylvania.

3 WHEREAS, May has traditionally been recognized as "Older
4 Americans Month" in the United States, a month set aside both to
5 consider the special and continuing needs of our older citizens
6 and to alert them to the existence of services and benefits
     7 available to them; and
8 WHEREAS, It is appropriate to recognize that older citizens
9 possess a wealth of experience, talent and wisdom and a
10 willingness to share them; and

1 WHEREAS, Older citizens highly value their freedom and
2 independence and want to remain in their homes and communities
3 as active and contributing citizens; and
4 WHEREAS, In the past several years during the month of May,
5 groups such as the American Association of Retired Persons and
6 the Pennsylvania Council on Aging have provided programs
7 designed to educate the general public about the special
8 housing, health care and income security needs of the 2.4
9 million Pennsylvanians who are 60 years of age or older, with
10 almost 238,000 of those persons being over 85 years of age; and
11 WHEREAS, It is appropriate to inform older citizens of the
12 wide variety of programs and services available to them,
13 including, but not limited to, the PACE program, the Property
14 Tax and Rent Rebate program, the fixed route and shared-ride
15 programs and the numerous programs and services provided through
16 the network of 52 local area agencies on aging; therefore be it
17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
18 month of May 2005 as "Older Pennsylvanians Month" in
    19 Pennsylvania.
