        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           NOVEMBER 10, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring all Pennsylvania veterans who served during war and
     2     peace on the occasion of Veterans Day, November 11, 2003.

     3     WHEREAS, In 1918, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in
     4  the eleventh month, the world rejoiced and celebrated because
     5  after four years of bitter war an armistice was signed that
     6  declared the "war to end all wars" over; and
     7     WHEREAS, November 11 was set aside as Armistice Day in the
     8  United States to remember the sacrifices men and women made


     1  during the war in order to ensure a lasting peace; and
     2     WHEREAS, On Armistice Day, soldiers who survived the war
     3  marched in a parade through their hometowns and politicians,
     4  public officials and veteran officers gave speeches and held
     5  ceremonies of thanks for the peace they had won; and
     6     WHEREAS, The Congress of the United States voted Armistice
     7  Day a legal holiday in 1938, but Americans realized that the
     8  previous war would not be the last one; and
     9     WHEREAS, World War II began the following year, and nations
    10  great and small again participated in a bloody struggle; and
    11     WHEREAS, After World War II, Armistice Day continued to be
    12  observed on November 11; and
    13     WHEREAS, In 1953 townspeople in Emporia, Kansas, called the
    14  holiday "Veterans Day" in gratitude to the veterans in their
    15  town; and
    16     WHEREAS, Soon after, Congress passed a bill renaming the
    17  national holiday as Veterans Day; and
    18     WHEREAS, Americans still give thanks to veterans for their
    19  service on Veterans Day with ceremonies and speeches, and at
    20  11:00 a.m. many Americans observe a moment of silence in
    21  remembrance of those who fought and for those who gave their
    22  lives to preserve the freedoms we now enjoy; therefore be it
    23     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor all
    24  Pennsylvania veterans who served during war and peace on the
    25  occasion of Veterans Day, November 11, 2003.
