        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 5, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the week of May 12 through 18, 2003, as "Working
     2     Women's Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Working women comprise nearly half of the United
     4  States labor force, with over 61 million women in the workplace;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, Women in the work force face added burdens caused by
     7  the demands of balancing family life with full-time jobs,
     8  demands which include child rearing and caring for dependent
     9  adult relatives; and
    10     WHEREAS, A vast majority of households depend on the wages of
    11  a working mother, and working families are often just one
    12  paycheck away from hardship; and

     1     WHEREAS, More than 35 years after the passage of the Equal
     2  Pay Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, women continue to
     3  suffer the consequences of inequitable pay differentials; and
     4     WHEREAS, Wage discrimination laws are poorly enforced, and
     5  cases are extremely difficult to prove and win; and
     6     WHEREAS, Fair pay and equity policies can be implemented
     7  simply and without undue costs while enhancing the American
     8  economy; and
     9     WHEREAS, Government, business and labor leaders should make
    10  efforts to find solutions to the special problems working women
    11  face; and
    12     WHEREAS, Women deserve recognition for the important
    13  contributions they make in their workplaces and communities, and
    14  it is necessary to increase public awareness of those
    15  contributions; therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
    17  week of May 12 through 18, 2003, as "Working Women's Awareness
    18  Week" in Pennsylvania and honor all working women for the
    19  sacrifices and burdens they face in today's job market as well
    20  as the significant contributions they make in their workplaces
    21  and communities.
