A RESOLUTION 1 Condemning the acts of terrorism committed on September 11, 2 2001, and honoring the heroism of the passengers of United 3 Airlines Flight 93. 4 WHEREAS, On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, four commercial 5 jetliners were hijacked in the skies over the United States in a 6 cowardly and reprehensible act of terrorism; and 7 WHEREAS, One of those planes, United Airlines Flight 93, 8 bound from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco, California, 9 crashed near Shanksville, Somerset County, killing all 40 10 passengers and crew; and 11 WHEREAS, The following people were victims of the attack: 12 Captain Jason Dahl 13 First Officer Leroy Homer 14 Flight Attendant Wanda A. Green 15 Flight Attendant Lorraine G. Bay

1 Honor Elizabeth Wainio 2 Deora Bodley 3 Marion Britton 4 Patricia Cushing 5 Jean Peterson 6 Christine Snyder 7 ; and 8 WHEREAS, The terrorism in the skies over Pennsylvania was met 9 and ultimately defeated by the heroism of the passengers aboard 10 United Airlines Flight 93, passengers who tried to regain 11 control of their plane and ultimately ensured that it was not 12 used as a weapon of greater destruction; and 13 WHEREAS, Those passengers risked and ultimately gave their 14 lives to protect thousands of lives of their countrymen; and 15 WHEREAS, Residents of Somerset County and State and local 16 emergency personnel responded to the crash quickly and with 17 great compassion and professionalism; and 18 WHEREAS, State emergency personnel continue to work with 19 Federal authorities to secure and investigate the crash scene; 20 therefore be it 21 RESOLVED, That the Senate condemn the craven acts of 22 terrorism that claimed the lives of thousands of innocent 23 Americans on September 11, 2001; and be it further 24 RESOLVED, That the Senate extend its deepest sympathy to the 25 family and friends of those who perished aboard United Airlines 26 Flight 93 and to the family and friends of all victims of the 27 terrorist attack of September 11, 2001; and be it further 28 RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the selfless heroism of those 29 aboard United Airlines Flight 93 and grieve their passing; and 30 be it further 20010S0108R1342 - 3 -
1 RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize that an attack against 2 one American is an attack against all Americans and that we can 3 and must join together as Americans to cope with our grief and 4 defeat the scourge of terrorism throughout the world; and be it 5 further 6 RESOLVED, That the Senate urge all Pennsylvanians and all 7 Americans to work together to recover from our shared national 8 tragedy, to pray together for those who have lost loved ones and 9 to grow together as one nation and one people, indivisible; and 10 be it further 11 RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize that Americans have a 12 broad range of ethnic and religious backgrounds and urge all 13 Americans, whatever their background, to join together in a 14 spirit of tolerance and compassion as we confront our loss and 15 build our future; and be it further 16 RESOLVED, That the Senate resolve, as President Abraham 17 Lincoln said at Gettysburg nearly 138 years ago: 18 that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this 19 nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- 20 and that government of the people, by the people, for the 21 people, shall not perish from the earth.
