A RESOLUTION 1 Condemning the acts of terrorism committed on September 11, 2 2001, and honoring the heroism of the passengers of United 3 Airlines Flight 93. 4 WHEREAS, On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, four commercial 5 jetliners were hijacked in the skies over the United States in a 6 cowardly and reprehensible act of terrorism; and 7 WHEREAS, One of those planes, United Airlines Flight 93, 8 bound from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco, California, 9 crashed near Shanksville, Somerset County, killing all 45 10 passengers and crew; and 11 WHEREAS, The terrorism in the skies over Pennsylvania was met 12 and ultimately defeated by the heroism of the passengers aboard 13 United Airlines Flight 93, passengers who tried to regain 14 control of their plane and ultimately ensured that it was not 15 used as a weapon of greater destruction; and
1 WHEREAS, Those passengers risked and ultimately gave their 2 lives to protect thousands of lives of their countrymen; and 3 WHEREAS, Residents of Somerset County and State and local 4 emergency personnel responded to the crash quickly and with 5 great compassion and professionalism; and 6 WHEREAS, State emergency personnel continue to work with 7 Federal authorities to secure and investigate the crash scene; 8 therefore be it 9 RESOLVED, That the Senate condemn the craven acts of 10 terrorism that claimed the lives of thousands of innocent 11 Americans on September 11, 2001; and be it further 12 RESOLVED, That the Senate extend its deepest sympathy to the 13 family and friends of those who perished aboard United Airlines 14 Flight 93 and to the family and friends of all victims of the 15 terrorist attack of September 11, 2001; and be it further 16 RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the selfless heroism of those 17 aboard United Airlines Flight 93 and grieve their passing; and 18 be it further 19 RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize that an attack against 20 one American is an attack against all Americans and that we can 21 and must join together as Americans to cope with our grief and 22 defeat the scourge of terrorism throughout the world; and be it 23 further 24 RESOLVED, That the Senate urge all Pennsylvanians and all 25 Americans to work together to recover from our shared national 26 tragedy, to pray together for those who have lost loved ones and 27 to grow together as one nation and one people, indivisible; and 28 be it further 29 RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize that Americans have a 30 broad range of ethnic and religious backgrounds and urge all 20010S0108R1327 - 2 -
1 Americans, whatever their background, to join together in a 2 spirit of tolerance and compassion as we confront our loss and 3 build our future; and be it further 4 RESOLVED, That the Senate resolve, as President Abraham 5 Lincoln said at Gettysburg nearly 138 years ago: 6 that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this 7 nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- 8 and that government of the people, by the people, for the 9 people, shall not perish from the earth.
