A RESOLUTION 1 Commending Samuel London Evans on the occasion of his 100th 2 birthday on November 11, 2002. 3 WHEREAS, Samuel London Evans was born on November 11, 1902, 4 and resides in the City of Philadelphia; and 5 WHEREAS, A former porter of the Stark Piano Company, former 6 manager of the Philadelphia Orchestra and founder of the 7 Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra Society, Mr. Evans has earned 8 recognition for his notable contributions to Philadelphia 9 musicians and concertgoers; and 10 WHEREAS, Mr. Evans provided further leadership and service 11 following his 1940 appointment by President Franklin Roosevelt 12 as coordinator of the United States Division of Physical Fitness 13 and his 1945 appointment to the Pennsylvania State Athletic 14 Commission; and 15 WHEREAS, Following his appointment by President Lyndon 16 Johnson as Czar of the War on Poverty in 1965, Mr. Evans was 17 instrumental in organizing the Philadelphia Housing Development
1 Corporation as well as Get Set, Head Start and Community Legal 2 Service programs in Philadelphia; and 3 WHEREAS, Mr. Evans organized Youth City for Philadelphia 4 youths and Family of Leaders, participated in the Columbia 5 University World Study Tour and the New York University 6 Frontiers of Knowledge Study in Integrated Concepts and served 7 as executive vice president of the United States Bicentennial 8 Corporation; therefore be it 9 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives extend 10 commendations to Samuel London Evans on the occasion of his 11 100th birthday on November 11, 2002, in recognition of his 12 outstanding citizenship and lifelong commitment to civic and 13 artistic enterprises, cooperative education and social justice.
