A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of October 2002 as "Italian Heritage 2 Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Italian heritage is richly entwined in the history 4 of the United States; and 5 WHEREAS, The voyages of explorer Christopher Columbus 6 resulted in the discovery of the American continents on October 7 12, 1492; and 8 WHEREAS, Italians and people of Italian descent have made 9 remarkable contributions to the development of our country 10 through exploration, science, literature, business and 11 government; and 12 WHEREAS, Our government was created and formed with
1 contributions from Italian Americans such as William Paca, a 2 signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Philip Mazzei, 3 organizer of the Constitutional Society, a forum for development 4 of the Constitution of the United States; and 5 WHEREAS, James Latta graduated with six classmates in the 6 first class of what is now known as the University of 7 Pennsylvania; and 8 WHEREAS, Alessandro Malaspina surveyed the Pacific coast in 9 1791, drawing extensive maps and charts later used for further 10 exploration of the territory; and 11 WHEREAS, Eusabio Valli in 1816 contracted yellow fever for 12 the purpose of developing a vaccine for immunization; and 13 WHEREAS, On a sidewalk in Wilkes-Barre in 1897, Amedeo Obici 14 first sold roasted peanuts, a business he later named the 15 Planters Peanut Company; and 16 WHEREAS, Rosa Maria Segale fought against great odds, 17 including several encounters with the renowned outlaw Billy The 18 Kid, to found the first public schools in New Mexico; and 19 WHEREAS, Charles Joseph Bonaparte, Attorney General under 20 President Theodore Roosevelt, founded the Federal Bureau of 21 Investigation; and 22 WHEREAS, Enrico Fermi's development of the first controlled 23 nuclear energy reaction initiated the atomic age; and 24 WHEREAS, Man landed on the moon under the direction of Rocco 25 Petrone, director of the NASA Apollo space program; and 26 WHEREAS, Italian Americans have bravely defended our country 27 from the Revolutionary War to the present and led the fight 28 against slavery; and 29 WHEREAS, Twenty-four soldiers of Italian descent have been 30 awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor; and 20020H0710R4489 - 2 -
1 WHEREAS, Countless men and women of Italian descent have 2 served our county with distinction, building roads, founding 3 universities and making vital medical and scientific discoveries 4 that have shaped the nation; and 5 WHEREAS, The lives of Americans today are vastly improved and 6 affected by the dedication and devotion of Italian Americans 7 throughout history; therefore be it 8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 9 month of October 2002 as "Italian Heritage Month" in 10 Pennsylvania.
