A RESOLUTION 1 Urging the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission to 2 designate the Philadelphia Museum of Art as the 2002 3 Commonwealth Treasure of the Pennsylvania Historical and 4 Museum Commission. 5 WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Museum of Art in the City of 6 Philadelphia has been recognized nationally and internationally 7 as one of the world's most important and admired museums; and 8 WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, which opened in 9 1877, embodies Pennsylvania's most ambitious cultural 10 aspirations; and 11 WHEREAS, Considered one of the finest museums in the United
1 States, the Philadelphia Museum of Art displays, preserves and 2 interprets a collection of more than 300,000 works of art; and 3 WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Museum of Art serves more than 4 850,000 visitors annually and serves countless others by sharing 5 its collections with museums and historical organizations 6 worldwide through loans and touring exhibitions; and 7 WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Museum of Art's current building, 8 opened in 1928, has become a world-renowned landmark in the city 9 of Philadelphia; and 10 WHEREAS, The Greek Revival architecture dominates the skyline 11 on the western edge of the city and the banks of the Schuylkill 12 River; and 13 WHEREAS, This highly visible site highlights the many complex 14 layers of meaning and significance the museum and its priceless 15 collections hold for the community, this Commonwealth and 16 everyone interested in human creativity; therefore be it 17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the 18 Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission to designate the 19 Philadelphia Museum of Art as the 2002 Commonwealth Treasure of 20 the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and recognize 21 the museum as a truly outstanding historic and cultural site 22 worthy of this designation, valued throughout our Commonwealth 23 and the world.
