        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, NOVEMBER 19, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Urging the citizens of this Commonwealth to exercise a new level
     2     of awareness as our country prepares for the threat of
     3     biological terrorism.

     4     WHEREAS, Bioterrorism is the deliberate release of pathogenic
     5  microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi and toxins,
     6  into a community; and
     7     WHEREAS, The most likely diseases associated with
     8  bioterrorism include smallpox, anthrax, botulism, plague and
     9  tularemia; and
    10     WHEREAS, Bioterrorism poses a significant threat to the
    11  safety and security of all citizens of this Commonwealth; and
    12     WHEREAS, The recent terrorist attacks on the United States
    13  have increased public discussion and concern about the
    14  possibility of bioterrorism and our readiness to handle an
    15  attack; therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the citizens

     1  of this Commonwealth to exercise a new level of awareness of the
     2  risks associated with a bioterrorist attack; and be it further
     3     RESOLVED, That the citizens of this Commonwealth, while
     4  maintaining an appropriate level of awareness, recognize that
     5  our State's public health system is poised to quickly detect,
     6  investigate and prevent unusual clusters of illnesses that may
     7  suggest a bioterrorist attack; and be it further
     8     RESOLVED, That as we go through these uncertain times, we do
     9  not allow ourselves to fall victim to acts of hatred against any
    10  Americans, including Arab Americans, American Muslims and
    11  Americans from South Asia.
