        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 2, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Encouraging school districts to begin the school day with the
     2     Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States.

     3     WHEREAS, The recent tragedies that occurred in New York City,
     4  Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania have united Americans; and
     5     WHEREAS, People all across the nation are displaying American
     6  Flags to show their support for the families affected by the
     7  terrorist attacks and as a symbol of our national unity; and
     8     WHEREAS, The American Flag is known across the world as an
     9  emblem of liberty and justice for all people; and
    10     WHEREAS, It is important that all Americans, especially our


     1  children, be reminded of the struggle for independence and the
     2  preservation of our union as well as our commitment to freedom
     3  and equality embodied in the American Flag; therefore be it
     4     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage all
     5  school districts to show proper respect for our country and its
     6  traditions by starting the school day with the Pledge of
     7  Allegiance to the Flag of the United States.
