A RESOLUTION 1 Urging the Governor, on behalf of the Commonwealth, to acquire 2 land in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, on or surrounding the 3 crash site of United Airlines Flight 93 to serve as a 4 memorial for the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist 5 attacks on the United States. 6 WHEREAS, On September 11, 2001, terrorists commandeered four 7 commercial airplanes to perpetrate the most terrible act of 8 terrorism in American and world history; and 9 WHEREAS, American Airlines Flight 11, from Boston, 10 Massachusetts, to Los Angeles, California, crashed into the 11 north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City with 92
1 people on board; and 2 WHEREAS, United Airlines Flight 175, from Boston, 3 Massachusetts, to Los Angeles, California, crashed into the 4 south tower of the World Trade Center with 65 people on board; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, American Airlines Flight 77, from Washington, D.C., 7 to Los Angeles, California, crashed into the Pentagon with 64 8 people on board; and 9 WHEREAS, United Airlines Flight 93, from Newark, New Jersey, 10 to San Francisco, California, crashed near Shanksville, Somerset 11 County, Pennsylvania, with 45 people on board; and 12 WHEREAS, More than 6,000 people are believed missing as a 13 result of the World Trade Center plane crashes; and 14 WHEREAS, One hundred ninety people died as a result of the 15 Pentagon plane crash; and 16 WHEREAS, The terrorist attacks against our national landmarks 17 are also attacks on freedom and democracy; and 18 WHEREAS, Freedom-loving people throughout the world have 19 united with Americans in mourning the victims of these inhuman 20 acts of terrorism; and 21 WHEREAS, Americans have joined hands to support and assist 22 the victims of the tragic and evil events of September 11, 2001; 23 and 24 WHEREAS, Pennsylvanians share the grief of all Americans over 25 the heartbreaking events of September 11, 2001; and 26 WHEREAS, The lives of all people who died as a result of the 27 terrorist acts of September 11, 2001, must not be forgotten; 28 therefore be it 29 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the Governor 30 to acquire, on behalf of the Commonwealth, land on or 20010H0286R2518 - 2 -
1 surrounding the site of the United Airlines Flight 93 crash in 2 Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, Somerset County; and be it 3 further 4 RESOLVED, That the land on or surrounding the United Airlines 5 Flight 93 crash site serve as the location of a memorial for the 6 45 victims of the Flight 93 crash in Pennsylvania, the victims 7 of the World Trade Center and Pentagon plane crashes and all 8 rescue personnel who have lost their lives in the aftermath of 9 these crashes; and be it further 10 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to 11 the Governor.
