INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JUNE 13, 2001
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating June 17, 2001, as "Crib Safety Awareness Day" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that 4 approximately 900 infants suffocate each year in unsafe sleep 5 environments; and 6 WHEREAS, According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 7 one in three deaths from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is 8 from suffocation; and 9 WHEREAS, The disability and deaths of infants resulting from 10 injuries sustained in crib accidents are a serious threat to the 11 public health and safety of the citizens of this Commonwealth; 12 and 13 WHEREAS, Soft bedding and sheets present a hazard to sleeping 14 babies; and
1 WHEREAS, Secondhand, hand-me-down and heirloom cribs often do 2 not conform to modern safety standards, posing a risk to babies; 3 and 4 WHEREAS, Manufacturers and retailers of infant bedding and 5 furniture, hotels and other businesses that provide sleeping 6 accommodations for babies can reduce the risk of injuries and 7 deaths by ensuring that cribs and sleep areas are safe and meet 8 current safety standards; and 9 WHEREAS, Injuries and deaths can be prevented when parents 10 and caregivers take steps to improve safety in infant cribs and 11 sleep areas; therefore be it 12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June 13 17, 2001, as "Crib Safety Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania and 14 encourage all citizens to work within their communities to 15 increase understanding of the need for safe cribs.
