HOUSE RESOLUTION

No. 8 Session of 2001


        INTRODUCED BY CAWLEY, JANUARY 23, 2001

        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, JANUARY 23, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Urging the Governor to strongly support the removal of all
     2     wastes resulting from lead contamination from the former
     3     Marjol Battery site in Throop, Lackawanna County,
     4     Pennsylvania.

     5     WHEREAS, Marjol Battery manufactured batteries in Throop,
     6  Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania; and
     7     WHEREAS, As a result of many years of manufacturing
     8  batteries, a serious lead contamination problem exists; and
     9     WHEREAS, The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presented
    10  a plan for cleanup which would leave most of the lead waste on
    11  the Marjol site and bury it under an impermeable ten-acre cap;
    12  and
    13     WHEREAS, After much protest from the local community, State
    14  legislative and congressional representatives, the EPA has
    15  agreed to postpone its final solution to this problem until
    16  March 31, 2001; and
    17     WHEREAS, This delay will give a Federal ombudsman time to
    18  finish reviewing the EPA's plan and make his recommendations for


     1  solution; and
     2     WHEREAS, United States Senator Arlen Specter, United States
     3  Representative Don Sherwood and State Representative Gaynor
     4  Cawley are determined to see a total cleanup of Marjol that is
     5  consistent with public health concerns; therefore be it
     6     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the Governor
     7  to strongly support the removal of all wastes resulting from
     8  lead contamination at the former Marjol Battery site in Throop.
