INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, SEPTEMBER 27, 2000
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating September 2000 as "Pan-African Studies Community 2 Education Program Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, In 1979 Annie Deloris Hyman, a graduate of Temple 4 University and a North Philadelphia community activist, 5 established the Pan-African Studies Community Education Program 6 (PASCEP) within Temple University's Pan-African Studies 7 Department; and 8 WHEREAS, Prior to coming into the Temple University campus, 9 the community education program held classes in community 10 centers, schools and churches, with university faculty 11 volunteering their time to teach the classes; and 12 WHEREAS, PASCEP's goal is to bring the university's 13 facilities and resources to the community by providing free GED 14 classes, computer education and repair classes, adult classes 15 for reading and writing, tutoring for students who may need 16 additional support in math and English, community outreach to 17 inmates of Graterford Prison, continuing enrichment classes in
1 ethnic cultural subjects and workshops on ethnic cultures; and 2 WHEREAS, Currently the vast majority of PASCEP's courses are 3 taught by volunteer instructors from the community whose purpose 4 is to give back to others what was given to them in knowledge, 5 skills, inspiration and example; therefore be it 6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate 7 September 2000 as "Pan-African Studies Community Education 8 Program Month" in Pennsylvania.
