INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MARCH 4, 1998
A RESOLUTION 1 Declaring March 6 through 15, 1998, as "Heritage Week" and March 2 9, 1998, as "Charter Day" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, "Heritage Week" commemorates the presentation of the 4 royal land grant charter given by King Charles II of England to 5 William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, in March 1681; and 6 WHEREAS, This original charter granted land that would 7 eventually become the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and gave Penn 8 the right to establish government, enact laws and create 9 policies to create his "holy experiment"; and 10 WHEREAS, The charter, a highly embellished and rare document,
1 was the personal copy of William Penn given by his heirs to the 2 Commonwealth in 1812 and was recently cleaned and repaired for 3 display in this Commonwealth from March 6 through 15, 1998; and 4 WHEREAS, All citizens are invited to view the charter at the 5 State Museum in Harrisburg during this time period and to sign a 6 card there for Pennsylvania's 316th birthday; and 7 WHEREAS, The 27 historic sites operated by the Pennsylvania 8 Historical and Museum Commission will be open and free to the 9 public on March 8, 1998; and 10 WHEREAS, A special symposium entitled "The Ideals of William 11 Penn and the Political Realities of Pennsylvania" will be held 12 at the State Museum and will be free to the public on March 9, 13 1998; and 14 WHEREAS, Former Speaker K. Leroy Irvis is being honored on 15 March 9, 1998, as the first recipient of the Pennsylvania 16 Founder's Award, which recognizes a Pennsylvanian who most 17 exemplifies the qualities of William Penn; therefore be it 18 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare March 6 19 through 15, 1998, as "Heritage Week" and March 9, 1998, as 20 "Charter Day" in Pennsylvania and encourage citizens to 21 participate in special events and activities commemorating the 22 land grant of King Charles II to William Penn in 1681 23 establishing Pennsylvania.
