        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 29, 1997

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Congratulating Muhlenberg College on the occasion of its
     2     sesquicentennial.

     3     WHEREAS, Founded in Allentown in 1848 to provide a liberal
     4  arts education in the Christian humanistic tradition, Muhlenberg
     5  College is an independent, undergraduate, coeducational
     6  institution affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
     7  America which has maintained an ongoing commitment to high
     8  standards of academic integrity and excellence; and
     9     WHEREAS, As a liberal arts college, Muhlenberg offers
    10  programs in the humanities, the natural and social sciences and
    11  in professional areas such as business, education and
    12  premedical, pretheological and prelaw studies; and
    13     WHEREAS, Muhlenberg College strives to keep its curriculum


     1  vital and current with the rapidly changing intellectual world,
     2  and the excellence and integrity of its programs have been
     3  recognized by Phi Beta Kappa and 13 additional national honorary
     4  societies which have established chapters at the college; and
     5     WHEREAS, accredited by the Middle States Association of
     6  Colleges and Secondary Schools, the Department of Education of
     7  the Commonwealth and the New York State Board of Regents,
     8  Muhlenberg College is on the approved list of the American
     9  Chemical Society; and
    10     WHEREAS, The college is a member of the American Council on
    11  Education, the Association of American Colleges, the Council for
    12  the Advancement and Support of Education, the American
    13  Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, the College
    14  Entrance Examination Board, the Pennsylvania Association of
    15  Colleges and Universities, the Pennsylvania Commission for
    16  Independent Colleges and the National Collegiate Honors Council;
    17  and
    18     WHEREAS, Most significant in its tradition are the historic
    19  ties between the Lutheran Church and the college, which was
    20  named in honor of the patriarch of the Lutheran Church in
    21  America, Henry Melchior Muhlenberg; and
    22     WHEREAS, The sons of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg contributed to
    23  the early life of our country, with General John Peter Gabriel
    24  Muhlenberg wintering at Valley Forge with George Washington,
    25  Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg serving as the first Speaker of
    26  the United States House of Representatives and Henry Ernst
    27  Muhlenberg attaining distinction as an eminent scientist and
    28  first president of Franklin College, now Franklin and Marshall
    29  College; and
    30     WHEREAS, Muhlenberg College is celebrating its

     1  sesquicentennial during the 1997-1998 academic year; therefore
     2  be it
     3     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate
     4  Muhlenberg College, its staff, faculty, students and alumni, on
     5  its sesquicentennial.
