                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of August 9, 1955 (P.L.323, No.130), entitled
     2     "An act relating to counties of the third, fourth, fifth,
     3     sixth, seventh and eighth classes; amending, revising,
     4     consolidating and changing the laws relating thereto,"
     5     authorizing county appropriations for the observance of Flag
     6     Day; and further providing for payments to historical
     7     societies.

     8     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     9  hereby enacts as follows:
    10     Section 1.  The heading and subsection (a) of section 1921 of
    11  the act of August 9, 1955 (P.L.323, No.130), known as The County
    12  Code, amended October 4, 1978 (P.L.964, No.190), are amended to
    13  read:
    14     Section 1921.  Appropriations to Veterans' Organizations for
    15  Expenses of Memorial Day; Veterans' Day, Flag Day and
    16  Independence Day.--(a)  The board of commissioners may
    17  appropriate, annually, to each camp of the United Spanish War
    18  Veterans, and to each post of the American Legion, and to each
    19  post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and to each post of the
    20  Veterans of World War I of the U. S. A., Inc., and to each post

     1  of the American War Veterans of World War II (AMVETS), and to
     2  each post of the Society of the Twenty-eighth Division, AEF,
     3  Incorporated, and to each post of the Italian American War
     4  Veterans of the United States, Incorporated, and to each
     5  detachment of the Marine Corps League, and to each Naval
     6  Association, and to each post of the Grand Army of the Republic,
     7  and to each post of the Disabled American Veterans of the World
     8  War, and to each organization of American Gold Star Mothers, and
     9  to each organization of ex-service persons incorporated under
    10  the act of April twenty-nine, one thousand eight hundred
    11  seventy-four (Pamphlet Laws 73), and the supplements thereto, in
    12  the county, any sum budgeted to aid in defraying the expenses of
    13  Memorial Day, Veterans' Day, Flag Day and Independence Day.

    15     Section 2.  Section 1929 of the act, amended July 1, 1978
    16  (P.L.695, No.120), is amended to read:
    17     Section 1929.  Payment to Historical Societies.--The board of
    18  commissioners may pay, out of the county funds not otherwise
    19  appropriated, a sum of money [not exceeding ten thousand dollars
    20  ($10,000) annually] to [the] a county historical society or to
    21  county historical societies, to assist in paying the running
    22  expenses [thereof]. [If there is more than one such society in
    23  the county, such payment may be made only to the oldest
    24  society.] Where [any such] a society is comprised of residents
    25  of more than one county, the commissioners of [said] the
    26  respective counties may jointly pay [said] the sum in such
    27  proportion as they shall agree.
    28     No [such] appropriation shall be renewed until vouchers have
    29  been filed with the commissioners showing that the appropriation
    30  for any prior year has been expended for the purpose herein

     1  designated.
     2     Section 3.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
