HOUSE RESOLUTION

No. 319 Session of 1992

INTRODUCED BY WILLIAMS, HUGHES AND JAMES, MAY 6, 1992

        ADOPTED, MAY 6, 1992

                                  A RESOLUTION

1 Memorializing Congress to consider the impact of the Rodney King
     2 verdict.

3 WHEREAS, The Rodney King verdict in the city of Los Angeles
4 and the resultant violence in that city and around the nation
5 has gripped the attention of the citizens of Pennsylvania and
     6 the United States; and
7 WHEREAS, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recognizes that we
8 are dealing with humanitarian issues and that to promote respect
9 and cooperation among diverse cultural groups, we must initiate
10 methods to better explain and allow people to understand that
    11  unprovoked violence perpetrated against another human is wrong;
    12 and
13 WHEREAS, This Commonwealth should promote peace, harmony and
14 good will among all men and women irrespective of ethnic origin,
15 socioeconomic standing or religious affiliation; and
16 WHEREAS, We encourage all branches of government to consider
17 that excessive, needless violence, whether it be perpetrated by

1 a citizen or sanctioned by an agent of a Federal, State or local
2 authority, is wrong and that we as a governmental entity be
3 cognizant of promoting methods to reduce the frequency of such
     4 violence; and
5 WHEREAS, We encourage the highest levels of government to
6 provide direction and leadership by actively participating in
7 whatever measures they have available to help restore the
8 dignity and pride which we all share in our nation's creed of
9 promising fairness and justice to each citizen; and
10 WHEREAS, We, the members of the Pennsylvania House of
11 Representatives, believe that these measures will assist in
12 restoring confidence, pride and hope for the future to all
13 citizens of this Commonwealth and this nation who view our
14 commitment to the preservation of justice as apocryphal and
    15 dishonest; therefore be it
16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
17 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania memorialize the Congress of the
18 United States to immediately consider the impact of the violence
