                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing March 24, 1992, as "American Diabetes Alert Day" and
     2     urging the citizens of this Commonwealth to find out if they
     3     are at risk for diabetes.

     4     WHEREAS, According to the American Diabetes Association,
     5  approximately seven million Americans in the United States are
     6  not receiving vital medical treatment and may be at risk for
     7  heart and kidney disease, stroke, blindness and amputation since
     8  14 million individuals in the United States have diabetes, and
     9  over half of these individuals do not know they have this
    10  serious and chronic disease; and
    11     WHEREAS, Over 750,000 people will be diagnosed as having
    12  diabetes this year and 150,000 people will die; and
    13     WHEREAS, The American Diabetes Association wishes to locate
    14  the seven million Americans, including an estimated 350,000
    15  people throughout this Commonwealth, who are not aware they have


     1  diabetes; and
     2     WHEREAS, The American Diabetes Association is urging everyone
     3  to find out whether they are at risk for diabetes and to become
     4  aware of the often difficult-to-detect symptoms before serious
     5  complications arise; and
     6     WHEREAS, The American Diabetes Association has available a
     7  simple screening test to help people find out whether they are
     8  at risk for diabetes; and
     9     WHEREAS, Those at particular risk for diabetes include Black
    10  Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans as well as
    11  anyone over 30 years of age who is overweight or has a family
    12  history of diabetes; and
    13     WHEREAS, Diabetes is a serious disease for which there is no
    14  known cure; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize March
    16  24, 1992, as "American Diabetes Alert Day" and urge the citizens
    17  of this Commonwealth to find out if they are at risk for
    18  diabetes.
