                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of August 18 through 24, 1991, as "Little
     2     League Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, On June 6, 1939, the first Little League baseball
     4  game was played in Williamsport, Pennsylvania; and
     5     WHEREAS, The Little League program in 1939 consisted of three
     6  teams, all in Williamsport, and by 1946 there were 12 such
     7  programs, all in Pennsylvania; and
     8     WHEREAS, By 1955, Little League was found in every state, and
     9  is currently played in over 42 countries, with 2.5 million
    10  youngsters participating, culminating in a World Series each
    11  year; and
    12     WHEREAS, From its inception, Little League baseball has been
    13  a vehicle for a program to promote the attributes of fair play,
    14  good sportsmanship and a desire to excel through friendly
    15  competition; and
    16     WHEREAS, Thousands of adult volunteers give of their time,
    17  energy and ability to make this program possible; and


     1     WHEREAS, Over 450 Major League baseball players and countless
     2  leaders in politics, business and industry are Little League
     3  graduates; and
     4     WHEREAS, Little League is the largest amateur sports program
     5  in the world; and
     6     WHEREAS, The goals of Little League baseball have always been
     7  and will remain to instill in children the values of teamwork,
     8  discipline and responsibility through a simple, fun game of
     9  baseball. Since 1939, and far into the next century, the value
    10  of Little League baseball will be measured more by what a child
    11  learns than what the child wins; and
    12     WHEREAS, The 1991 Little League World Series, which will be
    13  conducted during the week of August 18 through 24, 1991, at
    14  Williamsport, is expected to attract between 35,000 and 40,000
    15  spectators and young athletes to this Commonwealth; therefore be
    16  it
    17     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    18  week of August 18 through 24, 1991, as "Little League Week" in
    19  Pennsylvania.
