                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Memorializing Congress and the President to support the Republic
     2     of Lithuania.

     3     WHEREAS, On Sunday, March 11, 1990, the parliament of the
     4  Republic of Lithuania, by a vote of 126-0, took the historic
     5  step of declaring Lithuania's independence from the Soviet
     6  Union; and
     7     WHEREAS, Lithuania was forcibly occupied by the Soviet Union
     8  in 1939 and illegally incorporated into the Soviet State one
     9  year later; and
    10     WHEREAS, During the 50-year period of Soviet rule, Lithuania
    11  has suffered under extreme cultural, economic and religious
    12  repression while many thousands of its citizens met with
    13  torture, exile and death at the hands of their Soviet rulers;
    14  and
    15     WHEREAS, Pennsylvanians of Lithuanian descent have
    16  steadfastly supported the land of their ancestry throughout its
    17  long period of Soviet domination and now celebrate its movement


     1  toward independence; therefore be it
     2     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
     3  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania memorialize Congress and the
     4  President of the United States to support the Republic of
     5  Lithuania and its people in their courageous efforts to join the
     6  community of free and independent nations; and be it further
     7     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
     8  the presiding officers of each house of Congress, to each member
     9  of Congress from Pennsylvania and to the President of the United
    10  States.
