HOUSE RESOLUTION

No. 215 Session of 1989


        INTRODUCED BY NOYE, PETRARCA, JACKSON, COY, NAILOR, MARSICO,
           BARLEY, PITTS, BIRMELIN, PHILLIPS AND KOSINSKI,
           OCTOBER 11, 1989

        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, OCTOBER 11, 1989

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Condemning the burning of the American Flag; and calling upon
     2     the Philadelphia Police Commissioner to make an
     3     investigation.

     4     WHEREAS, Carolyn Marvin, an associate professor in
     5  Philadelphia, burned an American Flag in her class, allegedly as
     6  an act to provoke class discussion; and
     7     WHEREAS, The American Flag is the symbol of our country; and
     8     WHEREAS, This outrageous act of desecration should be
     9  condemned by all citizens of Pennsylvania; and
    10     WHEREAS, This act may constitute a violation of 18 Pa.C.S. §
    11  2102 (relating to desecration of flag); therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives hereby condemn
    13  the burning of the American Flag; and be it further
    14     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the
    15  Philadelphia Police Commissioner to investigate this matter as a
    16  possible violation of Pennsylvania law; and be it further
    17     RESOLVED, That a copies of this resolution be immediately
    18  transmitted to Carolyn Marvin and to the Philadelphia Police

     1  Commissioner.
