A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the week of November 13 through 19, 1988, as 2 "Geography Awareness Week." 3 WHEREAS, Knowledge of geography is essential to an 4 understanding of the world's people, environment and resources; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, Technological advances in transportation and 7 communications have led to greater interrelatedness and 8 interdependence among the nations and peoples of the world; and 9 WHEREAS, The economic and security interests of the United 10 States make it important for Americans to communicate 11 effectively with other regions and cultures; and 12 WHEREAS, Studies continue to show that many Americans, 13 especially young adults, have little knowledge of the regions 14 and nations of the world; and 15 WHEREAS, Lack of knowledge of geography is harmful to our 16 Nation's position as the leader of the Free World and 17 detrimental to good international relations; therefore be it
1 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend the 2 Pennsylvania Geographical Society and the National Geographic 3 Society for its efforts to improve geography awareness among our 4 citizens and designate the week of November 13 through 19, 1988, 5 as "Geography Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.
