ADOPTED, MAY 16, 1988
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of May 1988 as "Better Hearing and Speech 2 Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Hearing is one of the most important senses, 4 controlling, in large measure, our ability to communicate with
1 others. It is currently estimated that there are approximately 2 25 million Americans, ranging from infants to the elderly, who 3 suffer from some form of hearing impairment; and 4 WHEREAS, In the past, individuals afflicted with a hearing 5 loss were often shunned by society and relegated to a life of 6 isolation. Unable to communicate, they were misunderstood and 7 were often left to deal with the insensitivity of others while 8 trying to make a life for themselves in a world where they were 9 perceived as "different"; and 10 WHEREAS, Through great advances in modern technology, coupled 11 with education programs for the public, thousands who suffer 12 from this handicap have been able to overcome some of the 13 negative aspects associated with it. Many individuals hold 14 positions of responsibility while pursuing significant careers, 15 and they are able to use a telephone, attend lectures and enjoy 16 various television programs; therefore be it 17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate and set 18 aside the month of May 1988 as "Better Hearing and Speech Month" 19 in Pennsylvania.
