A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1 Honoring the City of York. 2 WHEREAS, In 1747, at the request of William Penn's family, a 3 tract of land west of the Susquehanna and adjoining the Codorus 4 River was surveyed, and a town with wide, straight streets and 5 large, open public squares was planned; and 6 WHEREAS, The town was named Yorktowne, after York, England, 7 and the white rose was adopted as its symbol. Streets were given 8 English names such as King, Queen, George and Princess; and 9 WHEREAS, York was the first capital of the United States, 10 serving as the seat of government for the Continental Congress 11 which was convened in York from September 30, 1777, to June 28, 12 1778. York was officially recognized in the Congressional Record 13 as the location of the adoption of the Articles of 14 Confederation, forerunner to the Constitution; and 15 WHEREAS, York was incorporated as a borough on September 24, 16 1787; and 17 WHEREAS, York was incorporated as a city on January 11, 1887,
1 with D.K. Noell as the first mayor; and 2 WHEREAS, York has grown and prospered during the past 200 3 years and continues today as a thriving and flourishing 4 community; and 5 WHEREAS, York has produced many illustrious citizens, 6 including Colonel James Smith, signer of the Declaration of 7 Independence, who have contributed to community, state and 8 country; therefore be it 9 RESOLVED (the Senate concurring), That the General Assembly 10 of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania honor the City of York on 11 the occasion of its 200th anniversary of incorporation; and be 12 it further 13 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 14 the mayor of the City and to members of York City Council.
