                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending Title 75 (Vehicles) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated
     2     Statutes, further defining "financial responsibility."

     3     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     4  hereby enacts as follows:
     5     Section 1.  The definition of "financial responsibility" in
     6  section 1702 of Title 75 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated
     7  Statutes is amended to read:
     8  § 1702.  Definitions.
     9     The following words and phrases when used in this chapter
    10  shall have the meanings given to them in this section unless the
    11  context clearly indicates otherwise:
    12     * * *
    13     "Financial responsibility."  The ability to respond in
    14  damages for liability on account of accidents arising out of the
    15  maintenance or use of a motor vehicle in the amount of [$15,000]
    16  $10,000 because of injury to one person in any one accident, in
    17  the amount of [$30,000] $20,000 because of injury to two or more


     1  persons in any one accident and in the amount of [$5,000] $3,000
     2  because of damage to property of others in any one accident. The
     3  financial responsibility shall be in a form acceptable to the
     4  Department of Transportation.

     6     Section 2.  Section 1711 of Title 75 is repealed.
     7     Section 3.  Section 1731(a) of Title 75 is amended to read:
     8  § 1731.  Scope and amount of coverage.
     9     [(a)  General rule.--No motor vehicle liability insurance
    10  policy shall be delivered or issued for delivery in this
    11  Commonwealth, with respect to any motor vehicle registered or
    12  principally garaged in this Commonwealth, unless uninsured
    13  motorist and underinsured motorist coverages are provided
    14  therein or supplemental thereto in amounts equal to the bodily
    15  injury liability coverage except as provided in section 1734
    16  (relating to request for lower or higher limits of coverage).]
    17     (a)  Uninsured and underinsured.--An insurer issuing or
    18  delivering liability insurance policies covering any motor
    19  vehicle of the type required to be registered under this title,
    20  except recreational vehicles not intended for highway use,
    21  motorcycles, motor-driven cycles or motorized pedalcycles or
    22  like-type vehicles registered and operated in this Commonwealth,
    23  shall make available for purchase uninsured and underinsured
    24  insurance.

    26     Section 4.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
